Turntables pushed beyond recognition - as instrument, orchestra and machine for sonic transformations. Anglo-Iranian composer, turntablist and performer Mariam Rezaei brings an intensely physical approach to the instrument, moving between experimental music, noise, free improvisation, mutant club music and hip-hop. Working with vinyl as a live compositional instrument, Rezaei has developed a radically expanded turntablist vocabulary - from ´free juggling´ and ´needle weaving´ to ´fractured loops´ and ´turntable sines´. The result can be visceral and overwhelming, but also strangely delicate: warped rhythms, mangled samples, shimmering textures and fragments of voice and melody colliding in real time. Described by The Wire as “turntablism at its most physical and extreme”, Rezaei has performed and collaborated with artists including Eleni Poulou, Lucy Railton, Julien Desprez, Lukas König, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe, Okkyung Lee and Maria Chávez while her work has been commissioned by Donaueschinger Musiktage, Ensemble Intercontemporain and others. Following Fractured and the Blud/Skeen/Bown trilogy, her new double album Selected Adequate Works arrives on Heat Crimes in 2027.

Takkak Takkak is a duo project by the Berlin-based Japanese screwball producer Shigeru Ishihara (aka Dj Scotch Egg, waqwaq kingdom, scotch rolex) and the Vilnius-based Indonesian junk multi-instrumentalist J. Mo’ong Santoso Pribadi (one half of Raja Kirik). Each artist is known and loved for their solo, idiosyncratic productions. Together they fuse their joyous and challenging sound worlds through a strong mutual interest in each other’s artistic expression. The name Takkak Takkak is a nod to onomatopoeias in drum cultures and vocal percussion found throughout Asian cultures. It echoes the artists’ love of polyrhythms and explosive trance-inducing dance musics, which they slather with unabashed doses of low-end beats, screaming vocals, and wild energy – with a good joke brewing underneath. Gleefully subverting instruments from DIY junk instruments to slapdash electronic hacks, they bend notions of the traditional and the contemporary by pulling from their knowledge of asian traditional and underground musics, multiplying these with inspirations the world over to create passport-free music that you feel like you might have heard before, but can’t tell where and when. Their namesake debut album on Nyege Nyege Tapes, is an impressive balancing act: Takkak Takkak navigate their cross-continental palette with not only knowledge and skill, but a refreshing level of humor. This makes their music as infectious as it is fearless – it’s experimental, sure, but Pribadi and Ishihara are having a blast, and they don’t care who knows.

House music is also a history of places, bodies and exchange. Cologne- and Dakar-based producer and DJ Viola Klein works with these connections as musical material. Her sound moves between deep house, jazz, Mbalax and experimental club music, linking scenes and rhythmic traditions without reducing them to stylistic references. Her New Chapter project on Meakusma develops this approach through material connected to her album Confidant and collaborations with the Sabar Ensemble Diop from Saint-Louis. Producers including Kassem Mosse, Whodat and Nídia rework the material, while Klein adds field recordings from Dakar, fragments of piano and her own interventions. The result is warm, spacious and rhythmically alive – but also full of questions about where sounds come from and what happens when they travel. At Three Skies, Viola Klein turns the club into a place of exchange: not a meeting point of genres, but a space in which musical histories can encounter one another and become something new.
