Peter Evans – trumpet
Florian Zwissler – analogue synthesizer
Robert Landfermann – double bass

One room. Three musicians. No predetermined map. New York trumpeter Peter Evans, Cologne’s own analogue electronic musician Florian Zwissler and bassist Robert Landfermann share an interest in treating their instruments as unstable sound sources rather than fixed identities. Evans has spent more than two decades redefining what a solo trumpet can be, pushing far beyond conventional and “extended” techniques. He can make the trumpet whisper, split, crackle, produce multiple simultaneous tones or erupt into piercing harmonics and intricate microtonal textures. Relentlessly pushing its limits, techniques and possibilities with stunning virtuosity, his playing combines extreme technical control with the freedom of spontaneous invention. Landfermann turns the double bass into dark wood resonance of strings, vibrations and noises, while Zwissler calls the ghosts in his analogue synth machinery, expanding, stretching and transforming its sounds in real time. The trio creates an intricate, levitating music in real time: microscopic gestures can trigger sudden eruptions, while a single sustained tone may open an entire acoustic space. Rather than following a predetermined form, the three musicians shape the music continuously. The form is discovered as it unfolds.

A harp. A violin. An angelic falsetto voice. Ancient and futuristic, achingly intimate and strangely vast. The otherworldly sound of LEYA seems to come from somewhere outside historical time. The New York duo of Marilu Donovan and Adam Markiewicz transforms medieval musical references, avant-garde composition and experimental pop into something strangely contemporary. Donovan’s harp detuned and manipulated; Markiewicz’s violin and operatic voice moving between fragile melodicism, ritualistic chant and rawer sonic textures. Familiar instruments become unfamiliar objects; beautiful harmonies acquire a rough, physical edge. LEYA have collaborated with artists ranging from Eartheater and Actress to Ecco2K and Varg2TM, moving with ease between contemporary music, experimental pop, visual art and fashion. “a titanic feat … music that sounds simultaneously 300 years old and somewhere from the distant future.” – The Guardian
